REDUCE PODODERMATITIS

The calibrated straw allows breeders to reduce their litter loads by at least 21% and to fight against the appearance of pododermatitis.

WHY USE CALIBRATED STRAW?

I consider that I have improved my chick feed margin from 1 € to 1.5 € thanks to my repelling system [...] A defibration and a calibration at 2cm maximum is very important, beyond this length, many tests carried out by different groups show a systematic degradation of animal welfare. Bedding is a predominant factor for success in poultry farming. [...] "It is not recommended to use long straw in poultry farming, as it has a low absorption capacity. raw state "

We were looking for a machine capable of chopping into fairly short strands because we buy long straw in Spain "[...] Catherine and Jacques confirm a clear improvement in the quality of the litter and the atmosphere in the building which seems to be drier.

THE ROLE OF LITTER IN BROILER CHICKEN FARMING

Provide thermal insulation

The litter thermally insulates the animals from the soil, minimizing conduction losses mainly from the legs and possibly the keeler ”. ( Physical and chemical properties […] of litters in poultry farming, page 14)

Bring comfort to animals

The litter contributes to the physical comfort of the animals. It plays an important role in the behavioral development of the animal with the “dust bath” (ITAVI, 1997a and 2009).

Absorb moisture

In mild and humid weather, when ventilation is insufficient and the circulating air can no longer absorb moisture, the litter plays the role of "moisture absorber", which it subsequently restores ( ITAVI, 1997a).

Maintaining dry bedding is essential for animal welfare. Its quality is your best asset against the development of pododermatitis. Deteriorated litter has direct consequences on the musculoskeletal system of animals (lameness) with impacts on animal growth and carcass quality (source ITAVI, 1997a, b).

CHOOSING THE RIGHT BED TO SECURE YOUR PROFITABILITY

During observations made on ten batches of Pays de la Loire chickens, 5 batches were reared on whole wheat straw and five batches on wood chips. Of 100 chickens raised on chips observed, 81 ± 33% of the legs showed no lesions or minor lesions. Whereas for the 5 lots reared on whole straw, the majority of the animals (84 ± 6% on average) presented legs with moderate lesions. Physical and chemical properties […] of litters in poultry farming, page 39)

Choosing very absorbent materials to control the litter is essential for success in poultry farming.

It is important to note that most of the comparative tests between straw and shavings are carried out with straw crushed to a maximum of 7 or 5cm. This level of grinding is not sufficient and does not make it possible to reduce the score of pododermatitis in comparison with long straw.

Cost: from 160 € to 220 € / tonnes depending on the regions and suppliers.
Recognized as one of the best materials for bedding in poultry farming. The price and the supply are becoming more and more delicate because they are in high demand by the fuel industry. There is also the question of the acidity of the manure when it is spread.

Cost: average price of 220 € / tonnes
A product with very good absorption capacity. But with major drawbacks such as cost and dependence on an outside supplier. Its very high cost does not allow it to be used as a primary mulch. What is more, a study published in 2019 by ITAVI (accessible by clicking here)  highlights that despite the positive effect of the straw plug on pododermatitis scores, the additional cost associated with this addition is not economically rewarded...

Cost of 50 € / tonnes ( farm gate price - source Agricultures et Territoires camapagnes 2020-2021 ) in the bundle of 400kg.
Properly prepared with a maximum length of 15mm and defibrated, it provides an absorption capacity similar to the straw plug or chips: 4 to 4.5 times its gross weight in water. See below the results of a study conducted by Arvalis in 2012 to assess the effectiveness of different materials in terms of absorption.

Thanks to feedback from our poultry farmer customers, we analyzed the costs of bedding in poultry farming using standard chickens. In this comparative study, we estimated the litter loads by comparing calibrated straw to sawdust and straw pellets. These data are established in the case of a standard poultry farm with 7 batches per year in a building of 1800m2 with dirt floor and dynamic ventilation. The first mulching is carried out with 5kg / m2 and 2kg / m2 (1kg / m2 for the granules) of addition of litter during the batch.
