Cost: from 160 € to 220 € / tonnes depending on the regions and suppliers.
Recognized as one of the best materials for bedding in poultry farming. The price and the supply are becoming more and more delicate because they are in high demand by the fuel industry. There is also the question of the acidity of the manure when it is spread.
WHY USE CALIBRATED STRAW?
Pododermatites?
Quality bedding has a direct impact on the comfort of the animals and limits the appearance of lesions on the legs (pododermatitis) and on the hindquarters. Straw that has been graded and defibrated (breaking up the stems and bolls) provides an optimal bedding structure.
Litter from 1,5cm
It is very important to defibrate and calibrate the straw to a maximum of 15mm. Beyond this length, many studies carried out by different groups show a systematic deterioration in animal welfare.
Dust-free straw bedding
Our "Dust Shield" device automatically injects products to fix dust (80% reduction) and disinfect the litter to make re-cultivation safer..
+1.5€ margin Chick/Feed
The results show that calibrated straw allows a saving of at least 21% on your litter costs compared to 100% straw shavings and a saving of at least 16% compared to straw pellets.

THE ROLE OF LITTER IN BROILER CHICKEN FARMING
CHOOSING THE RIGHT BED TO SECURE YOUR PROFITABILITY
During observations made on ten batches of Pays de la Loire chickens, 5 batches were reared on whole wheat straw and five batches on wood chips. Of 100 chickens raised on chips observed, 81 ± 33% of the legs showed no lesions or minor lesions. Whereas for the 5 lots reared on whole straw, the majority of the animals (84 ± 6% on average) presented legs with moderate lesions. Choosing very absorbent materials to control the litter is essential for success in poultry farming.
It is important to note that most of the comparative tests between straw and shavings are carried out with straw crushed to a maximum of 7 or 5cm. This level of grinding is not sufficient and does not make it possible to reduce the score of pododermatitis in comparison with long straw.
Cost: average price of 220 € / tonnes
A product with very good absorption capacity. But with major drawbacks such as cost and dependence on an outside supplier. Its very high cost does not allow it to be used as a primary mulch. What is more, a study published in 2019 by ITAVI (accessible by clicking here) highlights that despite the positive effect of the straw plug on pododermatitis scores, the additional cost associated with this addition is not economically rewarded...
Cost of 50 € / tonnes ( farm gate price - source Agricultures et Territoires camapagnes 2020-2021 ) in the bundle of 400kg.
Properly prepared with a maximum length of 15mm and defibrated, it provides an absorption capacity similar to the straw plug or chips: 4 to 4.5 times its gross weight in water. See below the results of a study conducted by Arvalis in 2012 to assess the effectiveness of different materials in terms of absorption.
Reduce your bedding loads by 16 to 21%
Thanks to feedback from our poultry farmer customers, we analyzed the costs of bedding in poultry farming using standard chickens. In this comparative study, we estimated the litter loads by comparing calibrated straw to sawdust and straw pellets. These data are established in the case of a standard poultry farm with 7 batches per year in a building of 1800m2 with dirt floor and dynamic ventilation. The first mulching is carried out with 5kg / m2 and 2kg / m2 (1kg / m2 for the granules) of addition of litter during the batch.
